California dreamin’: Creating laid-back coastal style with Artos

There’s just no mistaking those Cali interior design vibes – the airy, open-plan spaces, the stripped-back coastal feel, the natural textures and the seamless transitions between indoors and out.

Coastal living in California is a lifestyle all its own – a brand of ‘thrown together’ chic that is actually a painstakingly curated aesthetic so refined, it looks effortless.

Located in the heart of Corona del Mar, Newport Beach (or CdM as locals affectionately call it), 507 Carnation Avenue is a picture-perfect example of the quintessential Cali pad.

Created by EBTA Architects and Luxe Home Design, this stunning property is described as a contemporary farmhouse with interiors by Dina Marciano Design – and we’re very proud to say that Artos products supplied by Pirch were featured throughout the property’s 3.5 bathrooms.

Spa-style washrooms

With peek-a-boo views of the ocean from the upper floors and rooftop deck, the emphasis here is on allowing the outdoors to take center stage. Inside, a muted color palette of soft grays and neutrals is warmed by exposed brick accent walls and punctuated by pops of black in the door hardware, stair rails and plumbing fixtures as well as artwork and accessories.

This approach gives an edge to the otherwise soft and dreamy aesthetic – perhaps a nod to the industrial maritime heritage of Newport Beach.

Throughout all bathrooms, our Otella in-wall faucets have been used to complement freestanding basins atop blond wood vanities, their bold backplate creating a crisp, clean silhouette against pure white walls that also echoes the geometric forms of the property’s black window and door frames.

In the master bathroom, a freestanding tub is paired with our Safire floor-mounted tub filler with hand shower, in matte black – with the whole ensemble flanked by twin privacy cubicles in tinted glass.

In the master and guest ensuites, our 10-inch square rainhead showers have been used to deliver a spa-like experience in the walk-in enclosures, with all valves and controls in full compliance with strict California water conservation codes.

The million dollar look for less

Of course, you don’t need to be living in a trendy California suburb to replicate this laid-back look in your own home.  507 Carnation Avenue is currently valued at just under $4 million – but with Artos products, you can achieve that million dollar look for less.

Here are some tips for creating that Cali vibe in your home:

  1. Create a soothing, restful and airy feel by using muted colors in natural shades of white, gray, beige, blue and green.
  2. Keep window dressings simple and light to maximize natural light – consider shutters instead of drapes if privacy is required.
  3. Be selective in your use of bold color – pops of strong shades including black work well, but avoid overuse
  4. Bring interest with natural textures like wood, brick, wool and rustic fabrics.
  5. Choose matte instead of polished finishes on plumbing and other hardware for a softer, more coastal look.
